This is a just a quick post to let you know Peter Bruce and b for a cure will be featured this Saturday, January 22, 2011 on TV with local San Francisco affiliate KRON Channel 4. Interviewed by Mr Henry Tenebaum.Along with Peter will a very important woman ,Ms Koree Moore. Koree is not only a model in the book but she is a victim of breast cancer and survived .A long with the book Peter Bruce & Jonathon Costello followed her documenting both photo and video of her double mastectomy and rebuild by the famed Dr Loren Eskenazi,which took less than three hours. The video will be released soon.

This interview with Peter and Koree will be live and discussing the project and where we're headed with the inaugural edition, breasts are beautiful. Since it's a live segment, it will be inserted sometime during the 7AM-10AM Pacific Daylight Time broadcast. So set your DVR/Tivo to record the entire segment, or watch it live on the web.

They did it...60 miles in 3 days...BRAVO

They did it! I completed the 60 mile walk this weekend and I'm still standing! I'm a little sore, and my feet are a wreck (they actually swore at me on the second day), but I did it!
It was an incredible 3 days and I have so many wonderful memories. It was joyful, sad, hard, funny, painful, and wonderful all at the same time.

Because of your generosity, and the support of all of my donors, I raised $2,400 and me walking team raised $124,000 to help end breast cancer.

Stay tuned, I'm putting together a photo montage and will email a link in the next week or so.

3 day tour and we are not talking gilligan's island

The bFORACURE 3 day Susan G Koman walkers,Kathleen & Sara are off. 3 days 20 miles per day.

Here is a little about what they are doing and Monday we will have some photos so please check back.

The Breast-Cancer 3-Day Walks benefiting the Susan G. Komen Foundation are challenging and exciting events held in multiple US cities each year. Walkers are challenged to walk approximately 20 miles a day for 3 days. They camp out each night in a tent city. All meals, snacks, and trail support are provided. Each walker must raise a minimum of $2300 in donations to participate. And they both did it.

Opening Ceremony
The Komen 3-Day for the Cure begins early Friday morning with the Opening Ceremony. When you arrive, take a moment to write the names of the people in your life who have lost their lives to breast cancer on the white ribbons we will provide. Those ribbons will be used to create a special memorial flag that will be raised during the ceremony.

This celebration is not just for participants. Friends and family are highly encouraged to attend, though please note that seating will not be available, so if you are unable to stand for 30-60 minutes, you may want to bring a folding chair. Please allow extra travel time due to expected traffic congestion at the site.

After the Opening Ceremony is over, participants will begin walking the 60-mile route and start a journey of a lifetime. It will be even more special if you are there to help send them off with smiles and encouragement. We'll also have the Shop3Day.com™ store on site if you'd like to purchase a souvenir for yourself or your participant.

7:00 a.m. - Opening Ceremony begins with community stretching.

From the Golden Gate Bridge - Follow Highway 1 (19th Avenue) past S.F. State University. Take the Cow Palace / Alemany Blvd. loop and continue to Alemany. Turn left onto Alemany and continue to Geneva Ave. Turn right onto Geneva and continue until you see Cow Palace on the right.

From Highway 101 North - Take Brisbane / Cow Palace exit, go straight to Geneva and turn left. Cow Palace is 10 blocks up on the left.

From Highway 101 South - Take Cow Palace / 3rd Street exit, immediately merge to the right of the off ramp and merge onto Bayshore. Follow Bayshore to Geneva and turn right onto Geneva. Cow Palace is 10 blocks up on the left.

From Highway 280 North - Take the Geneva / Ocean exit, and turn right onto Geneva. Continue a few miles; Cow Palace will be on the right.

From Highway 280 South - Take the Geneva / Ocean exit, and turn left onto Geneva. Continue a few miles; Cow Palace will be on the right.

Closing Ceremony
After three days and 60 miles, participants will take a final and incredibly emotional victory walk into the Closing Ceremony. Friends, family and supporters should arrive at the Closing Ceremony site at least one hour early to get the best view of the program. We encourage you to carpool or take public transportation. Not only is it better for the planet, but it will help lessen traffic congestion for everyone.

All walkers and crew members should remain in the Participant Holding Area where they will receive a victory shirt, cheer on fellow walkers and crew members and celebrate one last time together before their dramatic victory walk. The Participant Holding Area is CLOSED to spectators. If you wish to meet with a participant before the Ceremony begins, please have them meet you at the Closing Ceremony site. All participants must return to the Holding Area no later than 4:30 p.m. in order to join the victory walk.

bFORACURE Launches Online Preview of its ‘Breasts are Beautiful’ Coffee Table Book to Raise Funds for Breast Cancer Charities

Less than 9 months since the project’s inception, b for a cure has launched an online preview of its forthcoming breasts are beautiful coffee table book, whose proceeds benefit breast health organizations. Destined to be a hot seller during ‘Breast Cancer Awareness’ month and the upcoming holiday season, breasts are beautiful is a book that everyone can proudly display. Quantities are limited and will sell out fast!

The Concept -

To highlight the magnificence of breasts and the importance of their health, b for a cure has undertaken a unique project that compiles black and white photographs of anonymous nude breasts in a coffee table book format. Subjects span all walks of life and include everyday women, celebrities and politicians. The project will be released in limited editions annually, with a portion of the net proceeds donated to charities supporting breast health.

The Photographer -

Peter Bruce was born in Australia and spent much of his life traveling the globe. He's a seasoned professional, experienced in many styles of photography. During his career, Peter has worked with a variety of clients, including Playboy, the Melbourne Opera as well as shooting for major movie studios in Hollywood.

Great news...One-time radiation effective in breast cancer

Women undergoing breast cancer treatment get just as much benefit from a one-time hit of radiation directed into the tumor site as they would from an extended, daily regimen of radiation over the entire breast, according to research released today.

The international study, which involved more than 2,200 patients worldwide and 93 women at UCSF, showed that four years after treatment, the chance of having a recurrence of cancer was about the same for both radiation methods. The study looked at women with early breast cancer who were treated with surgery to remove a tumor.

The benefit of a one-time, direct-hit radiation treatment is primarily convenience - women would be treated while under sedation, immediately after having a tumor removed, and they probably would avoid a lengthy regimen of daily radiation treatment.

"This is the next step in opening up a broader range of options for women," said Dr. Michael Alvarado, a surgical oncologist at UCSF and one of the study authors. "We've been doing radical radiation for 20 years, and it's time to realize not all women fit the same paradigm."

The major drawback of the study, said doctors and breast cancer research advocates, is that it was able to follow women for only four years after their cancer was diagnosed. It's not unusual for cancers to reoccur after eight or more years, and it's possible that further study will show small but significant differences in recurrence rates between the two radiation treatment options, oncologists said.

Follow-up needed

"This is a major, landmark study," said Dr. Robert Carlson, an oncologist with the Stanford breast Cancer Center. "But it probably needs follow-up of eight to 10 years."

This study, results of which were published today in the Lancet, started in 2000 and included women from nine countries. Participants were randomly assigned to get either the new one-time, targeted radiation therapy or the standard weeks-long therapy. About 15 % of the women who got the targeted therapy ended up also getting the extended therapy because of hospital protocols.

With the targeted therapy, a rod was inserted into the area of the breast where a tumor was removed, which is the most likely spot for a recurrence of cancer. Radiation was applied through the tip of the rod for 20 to 35 minutes. With extended therapy, radiation was applied to the entire breast for about 15 to 20 minutes. Extended therapy lasted five days a week for three to seven weeks.

There were six recurrences of cancer in the targeted therapy group and five recurrences in the extended therapy group, which is not a statistically significant difference. Both groups also reported about the same number of complications from radiation, including infections; breakdown of the skin or delayed healing in the area that was treated; and pain in the breast or nearby areas. Such complications are rare.

Breast cancer research advocates said they are encouraged by the results, but they noted that the targeted treatment is years away from becoming standard practice and is not available to most women.

"The first thing I would point out is caution: This is not ready for prime time yet," said Barbara Brenner, executive director of Breast Cancer Action, a San Francisco advocacy group. "I'd like to see 10-year data on this therapy, and I'm sure the scientists would too.

"But I think this is hopeful. A lot of people will jump at this treatment if it's available. Many women would choose to get it over with, if they were confident that they would not be sacrificing anything in terms of outcome."

Happy to participate

Elysa Yanowitz, for one, was thrilled to be included in the study at UCSF. She was diagnosed with breast cancer two months ago, at the same time that her mother was becoming increasingly ill with ALS. Yanowitz said she was distraught at the idea of visiting her mother in the hospital every day on top of getting her own radiation.

She was randomly selected to get the one-time radiation therapy. Yanowitz had the tumor removed and got the radiation last Friday, and now she feels relieved to have the treatment behind her.

"I didn't physically or psychologically have the strength to deal with daily radiation," said Yanowitz, 63. "I broke down and cried when they told me I might be able to get it done in one day.

Lynn Redgrave dies of Breast Cancer

bFORAURE just found out this morning that Lynn Redgrave, an introspective and independent player in her family's acting dynasty who became a 1960s sensation as the unconventional title character of "Georgy Girl" and later dramatized her troubled past in such one-woman stage performances as "Shakespeare for My Father" and "Nightingale," has died. She was 67.

Her publicist Rick Miramontez, speaking on behalf of her children, said Redgrave died peacefully Sunday night at her home in Kent, Conn. Children Ben, Pema and Annabel were with her, as were close friends.

"Our beloved mother Lynn Rachel passed away peacefully after a seven year journey with breast cancer," Redgrave's children said in a statement Monday. "She lived, loved and worked harder than ever before. The endless memories she created as a mother, grandmother, writer, actor and friend will sustain us for the rest of our lives. Our entire family asks for privacy through this difficult time."

Redgrave was diagnosed with breast cancer in December 2002, had a mastectomy in January 2003 and underwent chemotherapy.

Her death comes a year after her niece Natasha Richardson died from head injuries sustained in a skiing accident and just a month after the death of her older brother, Corin Redgrave.

The youngest child of Michael Redgrave and Rachel Kempson, Lynn Redgrave never quite managed the acclaim — or notoriety — of elder sibling Vanessa Redgrave, but received Oscar nominations for "Georgy Girl" and "Gods and Monsters," and Tony nominations for "Mrs. Warren's Profession,""Shakespeare for My Father" and "The Constant Wife." In recent years, she also made appearances on TV in "Ugly Betty,""Law & Order" and "Desperate Housewives."

"Vanessa was the one expected to be the great actress," Lynn Redgrave told The Associated Press in 1999. "It was always, 'Corin's the brain, Vanessa the shining star, oh, and then there's Lynn.'"

In theater, the ruby-haired Redgrave often displayed a sunny, sweet and open personality, much like her ebullient offstage personality. It worked well in such shows as "Black Comedy" — her Broadway debut in 1972 — and again two years later in "My Fat Friend," a comedy about an overweight young woman who sheds pounds to find romance.

Redgrave's play "Nightingale" at off-Broadway's Manhattan Theatre Club in 2009 was the last time she appeared on stage in New York. Lights on Broadway marquees will be dimmed Tuesday.

"She was adored by audiences, and although she embarked on a medical treatment as previews began, she never missed a show and gave magnificent performances eight times a week," said Lynne Meadow, artistic director of MTC.

"We admired her strength, her talent, her courage and her enormous good heart. There wasn't a stage hand, a press rep, a box office person who didn't worship Lynn. She was true theatre royalty."

Tall and blue-eyed like her sister, she was as open about her personal life as Vanessa has been about politics. In plays and in interviews, Lynn Redgrave confided about her family, her marriage and her health. She acknowledged that she suffered from bulimia and served as a spokeswoman for Weight Watchers. With daughter Annabel Clark, she released a 2004 book about her fight with cancer, "Journal: A Mother and Daughter's Recovery From Breast Cancer."

Redgrave was born in London in 1943 and despite self-doubts pursued the family trade. She studied at London's Central School of Speech and Drama, and was not yet 20 when she debuted professionally on stage in a London production of "A Midsummer's Night Dream." Like her siblings, she appeared in plays and in films, working under Noel Coward and Laurence Olivier as a member of the National Theater and under director/brother-in-law Tony Richardson in the 1963 screen hit "Tom Jones."

"Before I was born, my father was a movie star and a stage star," the actress told the AP in 1993. "I was raised in a household where we didn't see our parents in the morning. We lived in the nursery. Our nanny made our breakfast, and I was dressed up to go downstairs to have tea with my parents, if they were there."

True fame caught her with "Georgy Girl," billed as "the wildest thing to hit the world since the miniskirt." The 1966 film starred Redgrave as the plain, childlike Londoner pursued by her father's middle-aged boss, played by James Mason.

Dismissed by critic Pauline Kael as a false testament to free thinking, the movie was branded "cool" by moviegoers on both side of the Atlantic and received several Academy Award nominations, including one for Redgrave and one for the popular title song performed by the Australian group The Seekers.

"All the films I've been in — and I haven't been in that many attention-getting films — no one expected anything of, least of all me," Redgrave said in an AP interview in 1999.

"Georgy Girl" didn't lead to lasting commercial success, but did anticipate a long-running theme: Redgrave's weight. She weighed 180 pounds while making the film, leading New York Times critic Michael Stern to complain that Redgrave "cannot be quite as homely as she makes herself in this film.

"Slimmed down, cosseted in a couture salon, and given more of the brittle, sophisticated lines she tosses off with such abandon here, she could become a comedienne every bit as good as the late Kay Kendall," he wrote.

Films such as "The Happy Hooker" and "Every Little Crook and Nanny" were remembered less than Redgrave's decision to advocate for Weight Watchers. She even referenced "Georgy Girl" in one commercial, showing a clip and saying, "This was me when I made the movie, because this is the way I used to eat."

At age 50, Redgrave was ready to tell her story in full. As she wrote in the foreword to "Shakespeare for My Father," she was out of work and set off on a "journey that began almost as an act of desperation," writing a play out of her "passionately emotional desire" to better understand her father, who had died in 1985.

In the 1993 AP interview, Redgrave remembered her father as a fearless stage performer yet a shy, tormented man who had great difficulty talking to his youngest daughter.

"I didn't really know him," Redgrave said. "I lived in his house. I was in awe of him and I adored him, and I was terrified of him and I hated him and I loved him, all in one go."

Redgrave credited the play, which interspersed readings from Shakespeare with family memories, with bringing her closer to her relatives and reviving her film career. She played the supportive wife of pianist David Helfgott in "Shine" and received an Oscar nomination as the loyal housekeeper for filmmaker James Whale in "Gods and Monsters." She also appeared in "Peter Pan,""Kinsey" and "Confessions of a Shopaholic."

On stage, she looked at her mother's side of the family in "The Mandrake Root" and "Rachel and Juliet."

"Nightingale" touched upon her health, the life of her grandmother (Beatrice Kempson) and the end of her 32-year marriage to actor-director John Clark, who had disclosed that he had fathered a child with the future wife of their son Benjamin. She sat at a desk and worked from a script, but it didn't affect what the AP called "her touching, beautifully realized performance," the AP wrote last year.

Lynn Redgrave is survived by six grandchildren, her sister Vanessa, and four nieces and nephews.

A private funeral will be held later this week.

Proposed Mastectomy Law Change (written by a surgeon):

I'll never forget the look in my patients eyes when I had to tell them they had to go home with the drains, new exercises and no breast. I remember begging the doctors to keep these women in the hospital longer, only to hear that they would, but their hands were tied by the insurance companies.

So there I sat with my patient giving them the instructions they needed to take care of themselves, knowing full well they didn't grasp half of what I was saying, because the glazed, hopeless, frightened look spoke louder than the quiet 'Thank you' they muttered..

A mastectomy is when a woman's breast is removed in order to remove cancerous breast cells/tissue. If you know anyone who has had a mastectomy, you may know that there is a lot of discomfort and pain after wards. Insurance companies are trying to make mastectomies an outpatient procedure. Let's give women the chance to recover properly in the hospital for 2 days after surgery.
This Mastectomy Bill is in Congress now. It takes 2 seconds to do this and is very important. Please take the time and do it really quick! The Breast Cancer Hospitalization Bill is important legislation for all women.

Please send this to everyone in your address book. If there was ever a time when our voices and choices should be heard, this is one of those times. If you're receiving this, it's because I think you will take the 30 seconds to go to vote on this issue and send it on to others you know who will do the same.

There's a bill called the Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act which will require insurance companies to cover a minimum 48-hour hospital stay for patients undergoing a mastectomy. It's about eliminating the 'drive-through mastectomy' where women are forced to go home just a few hours after surgery, against the wishes of their doctor, still groggy from anesthesia and sometimes with drainage tubes still attached.

OK, I don't often have nice things to say about San Francisco weather. It's generally fairly dreary and way too cold for my liking. But TODAY, the best word I can think of for the weather is GLORIOUS!! I feel truly lucky to have been able to walk for a few hours through a beautiful park to the beach in this amazing weather. The air was warm and fresh, and the ocean was a rarely seen color of emerald green. The waves are breaking nicely today and there were surfers galore at Ocean Beach. My double cappuccino at the end of my walk tasted amazing too. All in all, a great walking day. Definitely makes up for the training days I do in the dark, or fog, or freezing rain!

Trying to think of ways I can raise my required funds for the walk. I'm only 25% there. Maybe a big BBQ in the middle of the summer? Selling some things on etsy.com? I'll keep posting here, or if you are interested, email me at sfmommy99@hotmail.com and I'll let you know!

Now, I've got to put my nose to the grindstone to find a job.

Great help from Erotic Heritage Museum

As you all know bFORACURE will be shooting in Las Vegas soon. Amanda and the nice folks at the Erotic Heritage Museum stepped up to the plate and have given bFORACURE the use of their wonderful place just off the strip to shoot at.

Baring your boobs for breast cancer: Would you do it?

b for a cure: raising awareness for breast cancer

When I first came across the b for a cure Facebook fan page, I was curious.

I do not have breast cancer and I don't know of anyone in my family who has had it either.

However, there have been friends, as well as friends of friends, who have been affected by breast cancer.

Some survived. Some did not.

b for a cure has quite an interesting concept. “San Francisco photographer Peter Bruce, is compiling black and white photographs of more than 300 bare women’s breasts in a book, with proceeds going to breast-health charities."

The American Cancer Society's most recent estimates for breast cancer in the United States from 2009:

192,370 new cases of invasive breast cancer
40,170 deaths from breast cancer

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, other than skin cancer. It is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer.

Some might think that the b for a cure book of bare breasts is a strange way to raise funds. Personally, anything that raises awareness about breast cancer is a big positive in my very opinionated mind.

This is not Hustler, people. It's a book of breasts.

Undoubtedly, a great art form and nothing to be ashamed of. I learned this long ago when finding my father's paintings of "nudes" and realizing that bodies are works of art.

Bodies that are stricken by cancer are works of art that need an extra dose of love. They also need to know that people are supporting research so a cure can be found to return their body back to its natural, healthy art form.

Personally, I feel that this is one of the best and most unique projects out there to raise even more awareness about breast cancer.

Because I love this idea, I have decided to to volunteer for the cause and have put my name in for the NYC photo shoot in April, 2010.

That's right. I'm going to bare my boobs. Not like it's never been done before and I'd be more than happy to be chosen to become a part of this fabulous project.

Boobs are great and every woman should be able to feel hopeful that there could be a cure for breast cancer out there.

we're walking, we're walking - Kathleen's 3-Day walking log

march 1, 2010 - Had a great walk today, really needed it having not walked since last Wednesday. The park was a little tattered from storms, but beautiful as always. I saw a falcon circling a tree, looking for home or for prey? When I got home, I decided to walk the dog so that was about another 1.5 round trip. Forgot to stretch after.

Had a few ideas for fund raisers for my walk donations -- how about sewn scarf with gorgeous pink materials and a fuzzy hot pink backing? Could also make blue or green, but pink seems to be the way to go.

Where to: Ocean Beach, home on the 5, then walked back to Stanyon and back home

“b for a cure,” the brainchild of San Francisco photographer Peter Bruce, will compile black and white photographs of more than 300 women’s breasts in a coffee table-style book, with proceeds going to breast-health charities.

“Everybody loves boobs; everybody loves breasts,” Bruce said. “(We thought:) let’s create a book on breasts. And we might as well do it for a good cause and give back some money while we’re doing it.”

Peter Bruce said the photographs will be anonymous and will include women of all ages, ethnicities and walks of life, including women who have lost one or both breasts to cancer.

“This is not a playboy shoot, it’s a real-life project,” Peter Bruce explained. “We want everybody to look at the book and say ‘Wow, these are the people who could actually be affected by breast cancer.’ ”

Peter Bruce is a seasoned photographer who has worked with Playboy, the Melbourne (Australia) Opera, major Hollywood studios and celebrities that include Michael Caine, Elton John and Vanessa Williams.

He became cognizant of the scope and severity of the disease after his wife participated in a 3-day walk in support of breast cancer awareness. After kicking around some ideas, he and a business partner came up with the idea for a book that would enhance the beauty of women’s breasts.

Peter Bruce plans to print 2,500 books in the first run. Sale price will be around $50, with 30 percent of the profits donated to charity.

Although the charities have not yet been finalized, he envisions the proceeds to be split between a large organization with a good following, a juvenile foundation to help future generations and an individual on the cutting edge of breast cancer research.

Cal State Fullerton psychology major Anita Wadwa, 35, said she is skeptical about the project.

“I don’t see how photographing 300 women’s breasts is supporting breast cancer,” Wadwa said. “I wish people could come up with something more creative than nudity to raise money. If some women are willing to do it, great – breasts are beautiful. But I don’t think women need to be exploited, even for a good cause.”

While most of the models will be “everyday women,” Peter Bruce said he plans to include at least one pair of celebrity breasts (anonymously) in the book. Only nude breasts will be shown in the photographs. No faces or bodies will be revealed.

So far, more than 500 women across the country have signed up to participate.

31-year-old Tamisha posed at the photo shoot in San Francisco last month and was surprised at how comfortable she felt.

“I think it’s a great cause and it was easy to donate my time,” Tamisha said. “I don’t personally know anybody who has been affected by breast cancer but it struck a chord in me and I like the approach that Peter is taking with the project.”

Others are less certain.

“In terms of posing for the book, I don’t think I could do it, just because I’m not very comfortable exposing myself,” said CSUF marketing major Carmen Busa, 22. “Even though it’s anonymous, I just haven’t been in that position, I guess. I would definitely be interested in purchasing that book, though. I think the concept is really interesting.”

Busa’s sister Kristine, a CSUF alumna, agreed.

“I would not be comfortable with the pictures either, but I would definitely buy the book because I believe in the cause,” she said. “Our mom had an issue with her breasts and we know a lot of people with that issue in our family.”

“b for a cure” is seeking females 18 and older for upcoming photo shoots in Los Angeles, San Diego and Las Vegas. Bruce said the modeling is done on a volunteer basis.

“(Women) are doing this gratis, free, because they’ve either been affected by breast cancer or they see the beauty in the project,” he said.

Breaking News. Metastasis Risk Markers. Powerful New Tumor Killer passed on by bFORACURE

Two stories that broke online last week may have long-reaching benefits for women with breast cancer.

First, Science Daily reported on March 27 that researchers at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center have discovered a new marker that may identify, at the time of diagnosis, which of us are most likely to have a distant recurrence: in other words, a metastasis. Complete results of the study, funded by the National Cancer Institute, were detailed March 24 in the online journal Clinical Cancer Research.

Called TMEM (Tumor Microenvironment of Metastasis), this marker differs from other cancer markers with which you might be familiar. Most markers (a kind of cellular-level footprint) indicate that cancer is spreading or growing; TMEM predicts whether it will spread in the future, as it eventually does with about 40% of women diagnosed with breast cancer.

Obviously, this prediction gives you and your doctor a huge heads-up as you develop a treatment plan.

"Currently, anyone with a breast cancer diagnosis fears the worst—that the cancer will spread and threaten their lives,” said the study’s senior author, Dr. Joan C. Jones. “A tissue test for metastatic risk could alleviate those worries, and prevent toxic and costly measures like radiation and chemotherapy."

How does TMEM work? Without getting too detailed, it’s been discovered that when cancer cells develop a link with two types of normal cells—white blood cells, and the cells lining the walls of your blood vessels—it encourages cancer to spread. Scientists found that “TMEM density”—the number of cancer cells that form that link—was a good indicator of future metastatic disease.

"Traditionally, the likelihood of breast cancer metastasis is estimated based on tumor size, tumor differentiation—how similar or dissimilar the tumor is compared to normal breast tissue—and whether it has spread to the lymph nodes. While these are useful measures, TMEM density… may prove to be more specific and directly relevant," said Dr. Jones.

Will a TMEM density test become a regular part of future breast cancer pathology reports? Will it eventually help women decide on lumpectomy vs. mastectomy, and whether or not to have chemo? More research needs to be done, but this first study is an encouraging start.

Double-Duty Bisphosphonate?
Scientists around the world are collaborating on development of a powerful new bisphosphonate that might someday prevent osteoporosis, AND destroy breast cancer tumors.

If you’re post-menopausal, you’ve probably heard of the bisphosphonate drugs Fosamax and Boniva, right? Another, newer bisphosphonate, Reclast (zoledronate), has been shown to inhibit enzymes that feed cancer cells, thus killing those cells.

Problem is, Reclast has been designed to go right to your bones, bonding tight to prevent them from shedding and becoming porous. Sure, it kills a few cancer cells along the way, but Reclast knows its job is to build bone, not fight cancer.

Last week’s issue of the Journal of the American Chemical Society reports that a bisphosphonate “200 times better at killing tumor cells” is being developed by an international team of scientists from Illinois, Iowa, China, Japan, and the Netherlands. Currently in compound form, BPH-715 binds to cancer-feeding enzymes, not to bone. It also activates the body’s T-cells, our natural cancer-fighters.

While much testing remains to be done, BPH-715 might just be the first bisphosphonate that’s equally effective at fighting osteoporosis and breast cancer. And for all of us battling both of those afflictions, that one-two punch would be a dream come true.

My daughter was born two weeks after she was due, and even then she had to forcibly evicted. But really, who could blame her? She enjoyed being inside of me as much as I enjoyed having her there. Yeah, I’m one of those jerks who just loved being pregnant.

Even the delivery was a rockin’ good time. After the epidural worked its rubber-legged magic I was joking and laughing, and then I squeezed out that 9 pound 10 ounce baby like I’d squeeze a watermelon seed through my fingers.

A few seconds after she was born, my kid grabbed right onto my nipple and nursed like she’d been doing it all her life. Which, if you do the math, she had been.

Even my recovery was pretty much trouble-free, right down to that first poop. Mine, that is. They warn you that your first post-delivery poop will be excruciating, and when I felt the tell-tale abdominal rumblings on day three I trudged into the bathroom, squatted and braced myself for tears, but the experience turned out to be downright pleasant. In fact, when it was over I felt renewed, as though my bung-hole had been replaced, as though god himself had picked up the Grand Canyon, shaken it out like a damp towel, and let it settle, although this time the valleys had become peaks and the peaks valleys. I called it my “brand new anus”, just another perk of the motherhood game… the game that I was clearly winning.

Until our one week pediatrician appointment revealed that our perfect little girl had lost nearly twenty percent of her birthweight – double what was acceptable. Failure to thrive, he called it. Even though she was nursing every three hours, she was literally starving.

My tits were failing me.

My tits have always been my best quality. I’m not bragging when I say that. They are great, relative to the rest of my body, which is a gallery of horrors in comparison. There is so much wrong with what’s below my belly button there’s not time enough to list it all (although if you’re familiar with the myth of Medusa, then you’ve got a pretty good idea of what my pubic hair looks like). By default my tits were my best girls, and historically the first things to be revealed on a first date, a game of strip poker, or during a sale at the Home Depot.

The pediatrician suggested we switch to formula right way.

Whoa dr. cowboy! This is not my beautiful motherhood experience. I know what happens to children who don’t breastfeed. They become drug addicts, serial killers and socialites. I know that Michael Jordan was breastfed until he was three, and that Michael Jackson was not breastfed at all. But since I’m 200 years too late to locate a wet nurse, I conceded to use formula until the had gained the requisite amount of weight, but it would end there. After that I was determined to breastfeed my child for one year. Minimum.

It was suggested I visit a lactation consultant by the name of Binky. If Binky wasn’t available I was to see Corky. Those names are so real that I don’t even have a joke to go with them.

We drove to Binky’s office in Woodland Hills and she proceeded to examine my breastfeeding technique.

Her findings? What was coming out of my nipples was something closer to puffs of milk-scented air than actual milk. My supply “sucked”. That was the bad news. The good news is that it was the baby’s fault, not mine.

The baby had a bad latch, which led to my breasts being engorged, which led to my milk supply drying up which led to me sitting in a small office in Woodland Hills while a grown woman named Binky milked me.

Yeah, that’s right. She milked me.

Binky grabbed my nipple and pinched it hard, rolling it between her fingers…. I know this sounds like porn for Teletubbies, but it was about as sexy as b’acne, which is to say not very.

Binky pinched my nipple hard, jammed it about 12 inches into the baby’s mouth. At that moment, the moment of my first proper latch, it became perfectly clear to me that my baby was part piranha. I’m not sure how I managed to conceive a child with a carnivorous freshwater fish from South America, but it seemed the only way to explain the excruciating pain.

I stamped my foot on the floor repeatedly. That was to keep me from punching my baby in the face. Truth is, I would not punch my baby. But I may wait until she’s thirteen years old and give her one retroactively. I’m fairly certain she’ll deserve it by then anyway.

Two hours and several hundred dollars later, Binky sent us home with a hospital grade pump which I was to use every three hours until my supply could match my daughter’s demand.

When we got home, the husband bottle fed the baby while I zipped on my hands-free pumping bra, turned on the pump, and watched as it stretched my nipples through a transparent sleeve like Augustus Gloop going through the pipes of Willy Wonka’s chocolate river.

Now that I could actually see the milking process, I understood the problem. Milk wasn’t flowing, it was eking out of my nipples, like beads of flop sweat. One hour of Hoover-strength milking left me with a grand total of a half ounce of milk. And most of that came from the right breast. The left was completely useless. If my right breast was a slacker, my left was its illiterate cousin who lost half his brain in a tragic pig-farming accident.

But I would not be beaten.

Over the next few weeks my husband bottle-fed my daughter, while I pumped every three to four hours for up to an hour at a time.

I learned all about galactagogues, which though it sounds like an alien form of governance, is actually any substance that encourages lactation. As a result I ate oatmeal in large amounts, drank Guinness beer in small amounts and ingested an herb that made my skin smell like a combination of maple syrup and curry. Mostly curry.

I took a prescription medication for reflux, one side-effect of which is increased lactation; another side effect of which is depression. A hilarious situation for a new mother, if you think about it.

I went to breastfeeding support groups and listened to other new moms complain about their problems with overabundant flow, saying “ohmigod, I’m absolutely gushing. I could feed an army with what comes out of these”. I smiled with empathy while imagining punching them in their overflowing gazongas.

And I pumped.

Until little by little, drop by drop, my milk started to flow – or at least dribble. Not nearly at the rate the child was drinking, but enough that I could supplement her formula feedings with a little of my own milky love.

I was winning. Soon we would be the very picture of skin to skin maternal bliss.

But as one slow-flowing nipple said to the other, “not so fast”.

The child did not want the breast.

When I offered my ever-so-feebly lactating nipple to my daughter, she would give it a look and a suck, then scream into it like Henry Rollins yelling into a microphone. Worse, she could only be calmed by a pacifier. By a silicone version of my nipple.

This is what is known in the breastfeeding world as “nipple confusion”. But if you asked my daughter, she would say there was no confusion. That savvy four week old knew exactly what she wanted, and she couldn’t have been clearer if she’d emailed her thoughts to me and bcc’ed her lawyer.

It was hard not to take it personally. Almost as hard as it is to saw through a silicone pacifier with a steak knife.

So I continued to pump around the clock, and poured my liquid gold into little bottles that I or my husband would then feed her. I did this for four months and that’s when I gave up. As much as I believe in the benefits of breastfeeding, I believe that the six hours a day I was spending with the pump would be better spent with my child. So I 86’ed the pump and decided to let nature take its course.

For a while I tried to fool her into sucking on my nipples. I’d make her laugh and while her mouth was open I’d try jamming my nipple in there. But she never took to it, instead would just stare at me like I was some kind of pervert.

So now, two months later my child is one hundred percent formula-fed. She’s healthy and growing and I’m at peace with my choice. And that last part is a complete lie.

I am still tortured by it.

I worry.

I worry that there will be a chemical explosion and the city will be under siege by robots who take over the water supply and my baby will die because I won’t be able to breastfeed her during the ensuing apocalypse.

I worry that she’ll grow up to be a high school dropout, and date a guy with a tattoo of a snake on his face who tries to rob a liquor store and in the process shoots and kills kindly old Sheriff Jenkins and my dum-dum of a daughter gets blamed for it and ends up on death row where Susan Sarandon tries but ultimately fails to spare her life.

I worry that she’ll become an asshole.

And that’s why I still fight the daily urge to jam my dusty nipple in her mouth. I just hope I can get over it by the time she turns thirteen.

How does thermal imaging work?

Thermal imaging is a 15 minute, non-invasive test of physiology. Thermal imaging uses a highly sensitive, high-resolution digital thermal camera to take a picture of your body's infrared heat and display these patterns in the form of a digital image. The cells of your body produce heat through their normal function. Diseased cells, like cancer, usually produce more heat in their earliest stages of development (before a tumor forms).
Before most cancerous tumors grow, the cancer cells will:

stimulate new blood vessels to grow
re-open unused blood vessels
maintain those blood vessels already in use

The cancer cells build a vast network of blood vessels in the area it will ultimately grow. A tumor needs more blood flow than normal cells to support its rapid growth. With more blood flow, there is more heat. Thermal imaging examines these "hot spots" which can be the earliest warning signs of cancerous activity. This activity has been shown to begin years before a tumor forms, and before any warning signs can be given by other screening methods.

Is thermography safe?

DITI was FDA approved in 1982 for clinical use. It is a totally non-invasive procedure that is completely safe. There is absolutely NO contact with the body, NO compression, and NO radiation. While a variety of studies have called into question the safety of cumulative exposures to radiation, this is not the case with thermography. Thermography emits nothing. It is simply a picture of your unique thermal heat patterns. It is a quick and painless procedure, which makes it a great screening option for breast screening with "no harm done" in the process.

Who can benefit from breast thermography?

Breast thermography is a great option for all women but particularly women that fall into certain categories. Women with dense breast tissue, fibrocystic breasts, women with implants or women that have had mastectomies without reconstructive surgery are more difficult to screen for breast cancer using other screening technologies. However, that is not the case with thermography. Since the screening process is nothing more than taking pictures or images of the infrared heat emitted from the body, the size of the woman, size of the breasts or tissue type are no longer concerns for the sake of breast cancer screening. This test can provide a clinical marker to the doctor or practioner in the event that a specific area of the breast needs particularly close or frequent examination.

Who reads the images and writes the reports?

Our images are sent to Electronic Medical Interpretation, Inc. EMI is a professional group of physicians who are trained in the protocols of reading thermal images. A formal interpretation and written report, including color images, is prepared and sent to you in approximately 7-10 days. If quicker results are desired, rush service is available for a slight fee. We are happy to send a copy of your report to your doctor upon request.

What does the procedure involve?

This quick and easy procedure starts with you undressing from the waist up and changing into a hospital gown to allow air to circulate and allow your body temperature to cool down. Cooling time is approximately 12 minutes. While you are cooling, you will be asked to complete several forms including a brief medical history. Once acclimated, you will be asked to sit in front of the camera, with your hands behind your head. Five different images will be taken. This allows the camera to scan the breasts, neck and underarms as well as the lymph nodes under the arms, breasts, and neck. These images are then sent for interpretation and archived for future comparison. The average visit is 30 minutes.

Why do I need to establish a baseline?

After your first set of breast scans, it is highly recommended that you return for a second set of scans three months later. This second set of images will be compared to the first set of scans, and assures that your thermal patterns have remained unchanged. It is important to determine an accurate picture of your unique thermal heat patterns so that even the most subtle changes can be identified as soon as possible.

What is the difference between thermography and mammography?

Thermography detects the subtle physiologic changes that accompany breast pathology, whether it is cancer, fibrocystic disease, an infection, or vascular disease. It can alert you and your doctor to changes that can indicate early stage breast disease. It is safe, effective, and ideal for women of all ages. It is completely non-invasive and does NOT use radiation. It is a "do no harm" approach to routine breast screening.

Mammography is a test of anatomy that uses x-ray to look for masses or lumps. These masses can take years to form - sometimes 5-10 years before they are large enough and dense enough to show up on an x-ray. Although touted to be harmless, mammograms do involve compression of the breast tissue, which may be uncomfortable for some women. A dose of radiation is administered with each view taken.

Will I still need to have a mammogram?

While thermography is a great basic screening method for breast cancer, it looks at the breast tissue differently than a mammogram does. For some, thermography is an adjunctive procedure and is used in conjunction with the annual mammogram and/or ultrasound. For others who may not be candidates for mammography or choose not to use mammography, thermography is a great option. Mammography can be a very useful follow up tool when warranted. When used in conjunction with thermography, the rate of early detection is increased to as much as 95%.

In the event that something suspicious should appear on your thermogram, your doctor or health care practioner should be consulted immediately. After a thorough discussion of your options, you and your doctor or health care practioner may decide that a mammogram or ultrasound is warranted for a different view of the area of concern.

Can thermography diagnose breast cancer?

No. In fact, all other screening methods (mammography, ultrasound, physical/self exam) can only suggest the presence or absence of disease. The only way to diagnose breast cancer is through a biopsy and pathological study.

How accurate is thermography?

Thermography has a sensitivity and specificity rate of approximately 90%. As with any test, results are often only as good as the technician performing them. Don't hesitate to ask how much experience your technician has with the equipment and the performance of the procedure. A positive thermogram can be the single most important marker of high risk for developing breast cancer.

Why does my doctor not know about or recommend thermography?

Unfortunately, many doctors either don't know about this technology or have out of date information as to its efficacy and benefits. If your doctor would like to receive a copy of the most current research data regarding breast thermography, please have them contact our office.

How much does the procedure cost?

The cost of the first set of scans, including the doctor's interpretation and 2 copies of the report is $175. After the first set of scans, a repeat of those scans is recommended 3 months later to establish a baseline for future comparisons. The cost of the baseline scan is $125. Once the baseline is established, annual screenings are typically recommended for most women. Annual scans are $150. Once the baseline is established, if more frequent screening is necessary of the same region of interest, (more than once a year), all screenings are $100.

Is this procedure covered by insurance?

This all depends on your individual insurance plan. Some companies cover the procedure while others do not. Our policy is to receive payment at the time of service while providing you with a receipt appropriate for filing with your insurance company for reimbursement. Thermography is not covered by Medicare, Medicaid, or Tricare. If you would like to verify whether your insurance company would pay for a breast thermogram, the CPT or procedure code is 93740 - Temperature Gradient Study.

When Sopranos star Edie Falco was diagnosed with breast cancer back in 2003, she kept it almost completely secret at first a hard thing to do when you are famous, she barely told anyone on the set of the six-season HBO hit series on which she played mob wife Carmela Soprano. Falco quietly went into treatment & emerged cancer-free and with shorter hair in 2004. GREAT news for us fans.

She says she chose to stay mum because she didn’t want any fuss or pity. “It was very important for me to keep my diagnosis under the radar...because well-meaning people would have driven me crazy asking, ‘How are you feeling?’” Falco told Health magazine, earlier this year. Instead, she "bucked up, put on my Carmela fingernails, and was ready to work.”Good for her

Breast Cancer Cases/Deaths Per Year (U.S. and World)

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women today (after lung cancer) and is the most common cancer among women, excluding nonmelanoma skin cancers. According to the American Cancer Society, about 1.3 million women will be diagnosed with breast cancer annualluy worldwide about 465,000 will die from the disease. Breast cancer death rates have been dropping steadily since 1990, according to the Society, because of earlier detection and better treatments. About 40,910 breast cancer deaths are expected in 2007.

According to the American Cancer Society, in general, breast cancer rates have risen about 30% in the past 25 years in western countries, due in part to increased screening which detects the cancer in earlier stages. In the United States, though, breast cancer rates decreased by 10% between 2000-2004, due in part to a reduction in the use of hormone replacement therapy. Although breast cancer rates are rising in many western countries, deaths from the disease have decreased in some countries as a result of improved screening and treatment.

The lifetime probability of developing breast cancer in developed countries is about 4.8%, according to the American Cancer Society (the probability is about 13% for any type of cancer). In developing countries, the lifetime probability of developing breast cancer is about 1.8%.

Incidence By Ethnic Group

All women are at risk for developing breast cancer. The older a woman is, the greater her chances of developing breast cancer. Approximately 77% of breast cancer cases occur in women over 50 years of age.

According to the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program of the National Cancer Institute:

White, Hawaiian, and African-American women have the highest incidence of invasive breast cancer in the United States (approximately four times higher than the lowest group).
Korean, American Indian, and Vietnamese women have the lowest incidence of invasive breast cancer in the United States.
African-American have the highest death rate from breast cancer and are more likely to be diagnosed with a later stage of breast cancer than White women.
In the age groups, 30-54 and 55-69 years, African-American women have the highest death rate from breast cancer, followed by Hawaiian women, and white non-Hispanic women. However, in the 70 year old age group, the death rate from breast cancer for white women is higher than for African –American.

I grew up in Marin County which has one of the highest incidence rate of breast cancer of California counties & in my own personal life been effected by Cancer in general not only specifically of the breast . Which says something in itself that no one is exempt as disease such as this one shows no favoratism to income, and no predjeduce by race. I believe in what you are doing and was excited and so want to be a part of a project bringing awareness to something i have deep routed sentiment too in my heart, especially when done through our art.

Hello, my name is Brenda. I am a mother of three wonderful children, and a great husband who never left my side through all of this. I am in school earning my degree in IT, and will be graduating in the summer of 2010. I have had a very rough two years, but i keep pushing. I was diagnosed with stage 3C breast cancer on October 5th 2007. I was four months pregnant with my second child (my first is my stepson) when my doctor told me i had cancer. I had alot going through my mind as many of you already know. I did not know whether i was coming or going. All i could do was continously ask myself the question why me?, and still to this day would love an answer. I hope you all enjoy my story, and f or my fellow survivors never stop fighting because we will someday win our battle!!!!

This year, I'll be participating in a very special event called the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure.

I'll walk 60 miles over the course of three days with thousands of other women and men. Net proceeds from the Komen 3-Day for the Cure are invested in breast cancer research and community programs.

1.3 million women will be diagnosed with breast cancer annually worldwide, and about 465,000 will die from the disease every year. One person is diagnosed with breast cancer every three minutes in the United States.

BUT WE AREN’T HELPLESS.

We can continue to fight this disease. For my part, I’m putting my feet where my mouth is and on October 1-3 I’ll walk 60 miles (whew!) in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure walk to help raise funds for breast cancer research and education. This is an amazing event, and I’m thankful to be able to participate. Before then, I’ll train for hundreds of miles over mornings, evenings, and weekends.

Breasts are beautiful

We all have them and we are all susceptible to breast cancer.

In an effort to highlight the magnificence of breasts and the importance of their health, I am undertaking a unique project that will compile black and white photographs of anonymous nude breasts in a coffee table book format. Subjects will span all walks of life and will include everyday women, celebrities and politicians. My intent is to release the project in limited editions annually, with a portion of the net proceeds donated to charities supporting breast health.

The inaugural edition of the project will focus on the breasts of women (even though we men are susceptible to the plight of breast cancer as well). The format and subjects of the project may change from edition to edition but will all share the theme of nude breasts.

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women today (after lung cancer) and is the most common cancer among women, excluding non-melanoma skin cancers. According to the American Cancer Society, about 1.3 million women will be diagnosed with breast cancer annually worldwide and about 465,000 will die from the disease.

By participating as a subject in, or purchasing a copy of our limited edition coffee table book, you will help make this project a success!
